Biomass Wood Chips

Biomass wood chips are one of the most common fuels for heating systems using regenerative energy. The Dobbiaco-San Candido district heating plant uses untreated, unused timber waste such as wood chips, sawdust, industrial wood chips and bark as fuel.Wood chips have an average calorific value of 690 kWh/bulk cubic metre. With a bulk cubic metre weight of 300 kg, this calculates to a minimum calorific value of approximately 2,3 kWh/kg. Ash content:The ash content of biomass is between 2 % and 6 %, in extreme cases (e.g. bark) up to 8 %.

Advantages of biomass

  • Solar energy storage
  • Renewable energy
  • Closed material cycle
  • CO2 neutral
  • Reduction of air pollutants
  • Local added value
  • Reduction of external dependence
  • Secures and creates jobs
  • Rational use of existing timber waste
  • Reduction of transport traffic
